A sustainable democracy requires strong institutions, reliable structures, and active citizens. To achieve this, there is a need to balance state power with strong contending interests that hamper the development of democratic institutions.
In this context, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) promotes active citizenship development, institution-building, and democratization of key political and governance structures and processes which include social movements, civil society organizations, political parties, security forces, electoral institutions, and local governments.
To contribute to the work on sustainable democracy, FES supports partners’ activities that:
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung supports civil society organizations, academic institutions and political parties to achieve a more participatory, representative, and effective political system. Particular attention is paid to electoral reform and in developing a more inclusive and accountable political party system. This includes support for initiatives on governance reform both at the local and national levels.
FES contributes to current reform efforts in the Philippines by building the capacity of parliamentarians and civil society organizations to engage in these undertakings by providing information to the public in the form of studies and platforms for dialogue and learning from international experiences.
Young people comprise the majority of the population but are largely excluded from political decision-making. While spaces for political participation exist, these are often accessible only to a limited number of young people and thus do not maximize their inherent empowering functions. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung contributes to expanding opportunities by both capacitating young people to become respected political dialogue partners as well as to providing spaces to advocate their concerns at the local, national, and international levels.
