Economic growth – as observed in recent years in the Philippines – is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for a sustainable economy. It is unable to answer two critical concerns: how long can this kind of growth be sustained and who actually benefits from it? Thus, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the mainstream economic policy discourse in the country still falls short in addressing inclusive and sustainable development.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung supports projects that facilitate progressive discourses on economic development which emphasize social and environmental sustainability. These include focusing on distributional justice and inclusive growth as well as addressing the negative effects of climate change and the challenge of long-term energy security, all of which are important components of an alternative development framework and a modern industrial policy for the Philippines.
FES supports its partners to:
FES supports projects which explore economic reform options with inputs from economists, political experts, policy-makers, and reform advocates from progressive organizations, and identifies components of an alternative industrial policy model along with other economic reform proposals.
FES supports dialogues that aim to close the gaps between the different positions and interests among stakeholders of the energy policy and climate debate, as well as between different sectors of the economy. This mainly takes the form of international specialist meetings and expert workshops with the participation of local experts and communities with a view to working out concrete policy recommendations and courses of action.
The pursuit of economic growth across different parts of a highly agricultural country is an investment in rural development. Working for rural development engages a crucial role in our macroeconomy where it benefits different sectors including Local Government Units, farmers and communities in rural areas. A major role of FES in rural development is strengthening capacities of basic sectors to engage in the rural economy by learning resource governance, different tools of production, ensuring environmental protection tying it to economic development.
